This study analyzes multifamily housing complex environments as healing environments, identifying elements within these complexes that influence healing effects and proposing directions for healing environment planning based on factors of environmental use and complex environment improvement tailored to residents’ characteristics. Today, the construction of urban public housing has emphasized the need for community facilities and landscaping, through which the needs of diverse populations, ranging from the elderly to young households, could be addressed. However, to enhance residents’ well-being, it is necessary to consider the both internal and external residential environment factors and healing environment elements tailored to various age groups. Moreover, within urban public housing, the significance of the complex environment has grown, emphasizing the importance of a healing environment to alleviate stress caused by limited spaces and restricted facilities. This study explores the impact of community and complex environments within public housing complexes on residents’ psychological stability and quality of life. Specifically, it prioritizes the harmony between physical and psychological elements for a healthy life and proper well-being, identifying points for improvement in the healing environment and exploring avenues for their utilization. Public housing complexes in Seoul that received Green Building Certification served as targets for investigation. G-SEED Certification involves evaluating the suitability for research on a healing environment for residents' stress recovery through a nature-centered environment based on factors such as social welfare facilities for qualitative improvement of residential environments, securing green spaces, and creating ecological environments. Quantitative and qualitative research on healing environments were conducted utilizing representative theories. To examine healing elements of the physical environment in residential complexes, Roger Ulrich’s supportive design theory was employed, while elements of residents’ psychological healing effects were explored based on Kaplan & Kaplan’s attention restoration theory. The study aimed to derive research outcomes through four main research processes. First, an on-site study of ten public housing complexes was conducted in Seoul to analyze healing elements related to residents’ daily lives and to assess the healing environment of residential complexes. Initial assessments were based on accessibility, length of stay, sociality, and connectivity as per the supportive design theory. Findings revealed that while most complexes installed signage for accessibility related to autonomous movement, signage visibility remained inadequate. Efforts to enhance accessibility and convenience for socially disadvantaged individuals, however, were made at the entrance spaces of facilities. The importance of a comprehensive composition of elements such as gardens, artistic works for visual enjoyment associated with length of staying, benches, and shaded areas for pleasant rest spaces was highlighted in relation to length of staying and connectivity. Regarding sociability, there was a need for multifaceted facility utilization across different generations. Meanwhile, investigating linkage involved examining the connection between internal and external facilities, focusing on the interconnection between internal environments and urban neighborhood facilities. Based on the results, the current status of public housing complexes was examined, and specific detailed environmental elements for improving the healing environment were identified. Second, residents’ satisfaction with the environment in public housing complexes and their healing effects was investigated. The study explored how the environmental characteristics of residences impacted residents’ satisfaction and psychological healing effects. It delved into the influence of the natural environment within complexes, the layout of buildings, the presence of facilities, and their connectivity on residents’ satisfaction and healing effects. Survey results identified specific factors influencing satisfaction and healing effects, highlighting that nature-centered permanence and social activities positively affected satisfaction and healing effects. Third, how physical environmental elements and residents’ emotional states influenced healing effects was explored, revealing that walking paths, pedestrian paths, and related facilities within residential complexes impacted residents’ psychological resilience and healing effects. Lastly, space elements and detailed facilities within residential complexes that create healing effects were investigated. Spaces like walking paths, playgrounds, and exercise facilities were identified as crucial elements that fostered social interactions. Furthermore, healing environmental design elements were deduced, outlining characteristics based on primary spatial elements and secondary facility elements, presenting healing environment design patterns utilizing focal points in major spaces. In conclusion, this comprehensive study demonstrates that the configuration of environmental factors in public housing complexes influences residents’ satisfaction and psychological well-being. It emphasizes the need for environmental design and improvement that consider various age groups and household characteristics right from the initial stages of complex planning. The significance of this study lies in its validation of representative theories of healing environments through urban public housing, affirming the utility of theory application and the meaningfulness of research tools. Additionally, it is anticipated that the study findings can be applied to various residential environments in planning and guidelines centered around healing environmental considerations in the future.
