The Doctrine of Union with Christ in Reformed Theology and Its Ecclesiastical Context: Focusing on John Calvin, Herman Bavinck, and Todd Billings

This thesis examines the doctrine of union with Christ from the perspective of Reformed theology and identifies the ecclesiological implications of the doctrine. It will specifically summarize the characteristics of the doctrine of union with Christ in Reformed theology, focusing on representative Reformed theologians such as John Calvin, Herman Bavinck, and Todd Billings. Additionally, it will offer the ecclesiological benefits of the doctrine of union with Christ for the church.
Chapter 1 presents the objectives of this thesis, along with the methodology and scope of the study. It will also explore the trends among contemporary theologians regarding the doctrine of union with Christ.
Chapter 2 examines John Calvin’s doctrine of union with Christ, particularly in the context of soteriology, exploring the objective realization of union by Christ and the subjective realization of union by the Holy Spirit. The chapter will also delve into how the double grace of justification and sanctification is combined in union with Christ. Furthermore, it will study the ecclesiological implications of Calvin’s doctrine of union with Christ, revealing that the essence of the church as the body of Christ lies in its union with Christ. This chapter will demonstrate that an understanding of the doctrine of union with Christ is essential to comprehending Calvin’s sacramental theology, and it will highlight that union with Christ underlies Calvin’s emphasis on the church’s role as a mother.
Chapter 3 examines the doctrine of union with Christ in Herman Bavinck. The study will investigate how Bavinck’s view of union with Christ from creation has implications for our understanding of humanity. Bavinck argues that being a true human being is synonymous with being a true Christian. The chapter will show that Bavinck follows the Reformed tradition in understanding the doctrine of union with Christ on a covenantal basis. It will also explore how union with Christ fits into Bavinck’s organic Trinitarianism. Ecclesiologically, Bavinck’s doctrine of union with Christ holds clear and rich implications. According to Bavinck’s understanding of revelation, fellowship with God and the church is impossible without union with Christ. Bavinck contends that union with Christ is the root of fellowship with Christ. The chapter will demonstrate that believers united to Christ actually enjoy the fruits of fellowship with Christ. Bavinck studies the imitation of Christ in church history and argues that true imitation of Christ is only possible in union with Christ.
Chapter 4 examines Todd Billings’ doctrine of union with Christ. Billings is concerned with the practical benefits of union with Christ for the church. The chapter will explore how our adoption in union with Christ gives us a right identity. It will also examine his argument that, due to our union with Christ, the doctrine of total depravity compels us to recognize our existential hopelessness and turn to salvation in Christ. The chapter will also consider how the opposing dualistic concepts of God’s transcendence and immanence are harmonized in union with Christ. Ecclesiologically, the chapter will study the role of the doctrine of union with Christ in the relationship between the gospel and justice and propose a model of participatory ministry based on the doctrine of union with Christ rather than an incarnational model of ministry.
Chapter 5, the conclusion, will summarize the studies of the doctrine of union with Christ in Reformed theology discussed above and apply the discussion of this thesis in two ways. First, it will offer the main characteristics of the doctrine of union with Christ in Reformed theology through the work of integrating the doctrine of union with Christ in Calvin, Bavinck, and Billings. Second, it will present the practical and enriching ecclesiological implications of the doctrine of union with Christ in Reformed theology, reaffirming the importance of the doctrine of union with Christ and encouraging believers to recover and guard its benefits for the church today.
