This study addresses the external connections in mathematics, specifically focusing on the sub-component of connection competency amidst the current emphasis on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education and artificial intelligence (AI) in the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In response to the evolving landscape of the future intelligent information society, characterized by the prominence of AI, we identified seven subjects and ten units related to calculus—a core content area within the high school curriculum. Our analysis is based on high school mathematics textbooks developed based on the 2015 revised curriculum. The objective of this study is to derive insights into the external connections in mathematics within the calculus units of high school mathematics textbooks, as revealed by the analysis results. To achieve this research aim, the study formulated the following research questions regarding the calculus units of high school textbooks developed based on the 2015 revised mathematics curriculum:
1. To what extent are external connections included in mathematics? 2. How is the distribution of types of external connections in mathematics? 3. How is the distribution of levels of external connections in mathematics?
To conduct this study, the analysis focused on high school mathematics textbooks, specifically those related to seven subjects and ten units centered around calculus, developed based on the 2015 revised curriculum. The textbooks were further segmented into five sections: activities at the introduction stage, problems and activities during the development stage, and problems and activities in the conclusion stage. The criteria for analysis categorized types of external connections in mathematics into connections with real-life contexts, connections with other subjects, and connections with cross-curricular learning themes. Connections with real-life contexts encompassed four contexts: personal, occupational, social, and scientific. Connections with other subjects included seven subjects: Korean, English, Social Studies, Science, Physical Education, Arts, Technology/Home/Information. Connections with cross-curricular learning themes were identified across ten themes: safety and health education, character education, career education, democratic citizenship education, human rights education, multicultural education, unification education, Dokdo education, economics and finance education, and environment and sustainability education. The level of external connections in mathematics was analyzed by categorizing it into three types: simple material utilization, content integration, and content convergence. The analysis process initiated with the examination of the 'Differential Calculus' unit from the textbook as the initial sample. Two separate analyses, referred to as the 1st and 2nd analyses, were carried out at one-week intervals. In cases where consistent classification was not achieved, a 3rd supplementary analysis was conducted. Following the refinement of the accuracy of the analysis criteria through the sample analysis, the same methodology was applied to analyze the remaining nine units.
The research findings can be summarized as follows: 1. Inclusion Proportion of External Connections in Mathematics: Among the 10 units related to calculus, the unit with the highest percentage of external connections in mathematics was the 'Differential and Economics' unit (56.9%) in the subject, while the unit with the lowest was the 'Use of Calculus' unit (1.0%) in the subject. Within the same unit, the activity portion of the introduction, development, and conclusion stages exhibited a higher rate of inclusion of external connections in mathematics compared to the problem portion of the development and conclusion stages. When comparing textbooks, the inclusion rate of external connections in mathematics for the 'Differential Calculus and Economics' unit of the subject remained relatively consistent, ranging from a maximum of 58.3% to a minimum of 54.9%. However, the inclusion rate of external connections in mathematics for the 'Optimization' unit of the subject showed a significant difference, exceeding threefold, with rates ranging from a maximum of 38.9% to a minimum of 11.5%. 2. Types of External Connections in Mathematics: Concerning connections with real-life contexts, the personal context was most frequently observed in terms of simple frequency, appearing prominently in 5 units. The scientific context had the highest proportion in 4 units, while the occupational context took precedence in 2 units. No unit exhibited the highest proportion of the social context. Regarding connections with other subjects, science subjects were most frequently referenced in terms of simple frequency, with the highest ratio in 8 units. The ratio of social studies subjects was highest in 1 unit, and the ratio of technology/home/information subjects was highest in 1 unit. The most common type of connections with cross-curricular learning themes was safety and health education, with the highest ratio in 4 units. Economics and finance education had the highest ratio in 2 units, while environment and sustainability education had the highest ratio in 2 units. 3. Levels of External Connections in Mathematics: Concerning levels of external connections in mathematics, all 10 units related to calculus showed the highest proportion of the simple material utilization type level. The content integration type level appeared in 6 units, while the content convergence type level appeared in 3 units. Within the content integration type, further distinctions were made between the content description type and the actual data type, with the ratio of the content description type being consistently high across all 6 units. In the content convergence type, a total of 5 problems were presented across 3 units, with an examination of the achievement standards of other subjects related to each problem.
Based on the research findings, the following implications can be drawn: 1. Disparities in the Inclusion Rate of External Connections in Mathematics: The inclusion rate of external connections in mathematics within calculus units of high school math textbooks exhibited notable variations across different units. However, notable success in implementing external connections in mathematics was evident in units such as 'Differential and Economics' in the career-oriented subject, 'Optimization' in the subject, and the 'Mathematical Modeling' unit in science-related, advanced . This underscores the potential applicability of successful strategies to other units. 2. Imbalances in Types of External Connections in Mathematics: The types of external connections in mathematics identified within the calculus units of high school mathematics textbooks were predominantly centered on specific types, including personal context, science subjects, and safety and health education. Consequently, there is a recognized necessity to introduce a more diverse range of external connection types within the calculus units of high school mathematics textbooks. 3. Insufficient Levels of External Connections in Mathematics: The analysis revealed a relative shortage of problems categorized as content integration or content convergence types in relation to external connections in mathematics within the calculus units of high school mathematics textbooks, compared to those classified as simple material utilization types. Therefore, there is a proactive need to introduce problems aligned with content integration or content convergence types within the calculus units of high school mathematics textbooks, enhancing the overall level of external connections in mathematics. This study conducted an analysis of the calculus units in high school mathematics textbooks, utilizing the 2015 revised curriculum as its foundation, with a specific focus on the theme of external connections in mathematics. In an era characterized by the advent of the intelligent information society during the Fourth Industrial Revolution, where emphasis is placed on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education and AI (Artificial Intelligence) instruction, the significance of external connections in mathematics has become increasingly pronounced within the realm of essential mathematical competencies at the high school level. As a result, the outcomes of this study are poised to serve as a pivotal reference for future textbook and learning material development, offering valuable insights into the progressive trajectory of calculus units—integral components of high school mathematics education.
