In today's pursuit of sustainable urban development, there is a growing shift towards preserving and remodeling existing buildings and facilities, rather than engaging in large-scale reconstruction projects. This approach has become the prevailing trend in modern urban regeneration. Renovating underutilized facilities not only minimizes resource wastage but also maximizes space utilization, aligning with the evolving trends in social development. As a result, there has been a notable increase in the repurposing of idle industrial facilities, leading to the expansion of spaces such as cafes, art galleries, and museums. Notably, complex cultural spaces have emerged as key players in this transformation, offering users a diverse range of cultural and art-related experiential activities. In the contemporary era of the experience economy, emphasis is not solely placed on the value of products; it extends to becoming a benchmark for assessing the worth of a space based on the level of experiential elements and services that cater to emotional needs. Consequently, complex cultural spaces are actively focusing on delivering valuable experiences by fostering interactions with users through art and culture. This approach has given rise to a novel form of social consumption. The complex cultural space, as a crucial means of repurposing the city's idle industrial facilities, plays a pivotal role in fostering not only the sustainable development of the urban landscape but also in positively influencing the growth of the city's culture and arts industry. It has evolved into an indispensable component of the urban environment. These spaces prioritize the user experience, recognizing it as a fundamental aspect of customer value. They offer a variety of space experience elements and exceptional services, aiming to entice visitors and transform into community spaces that foster mutual exchange among users. Against this backdrop, the aim of this study was to propose recommendations for experience design within a complex cultural space repurposed from idle industrial facilities. By concentrating on the elements of experience design within complex cultural spaces, we conducted a comparative analysis of advanced cases from both domestic and international contexts, considering regional cultural nuances. The objective was to discern the correlation between experience design elements and complex cultural spaces at both user and spatial levels, as well as to assess the influence of various experience design elements on the overall spatial dynamics. This verification process is crucial for enhancing the user's sense of experience within a complex cultural space. The focus of this study was on both domestic and international complex cultural spaces that repurpose idle industrial facilities. The case study was geographically confined to Korea, China, the United States, France, the Netherlands, Norway, and Portugal. The research cases were determined through a combination of case studies and a review of relevant literature. In Korea, the selected cases included Seongsu Federation in Seoul, Mapo Cultural Reserve Base in Seoul, Picnic in Seoul, F1963 in Busan, Art Bunger B39 in Bucheon, Dongbu Warehouse in Cheongju, Samrye Book Village in Wonju, Palbok Art Factory in Jeonju, and Cosmo 40 in Incheon, along with Cheongun Complex Cultural Space in Gyeongju City. Internationally, the chosen cases comprised Beijing National Reading Culture Space and Shanghai Binumong Factory, Shenzhen OCT Contemporary Arts Center and Shenzhen O․POWER Culture and Arts Center in Shenzhen, Jinan Myeongho 100 Arts and Culture Center in China, Site Verrier de Meisenthal in France, Stavanger IDDIS in Norway, Tilburg LocHal in the Netherlands, University of Wisconsin Beloit Student Activity Center in the United States, and Bridge in Portugal. The Vera Arquipélago Contemporary Art Center was also selected in Portugal. The temporal scope of the study included cases that transpired in the last decade, specifically from 2013 to 2023. These cases were chosen for their representativeness in terms of spatial format and design methodology, providing valuable insights for the contemporary design of repurposed complex cultural spaces. In this study, the limitations of the case study results can be reduced by supplementing the scope of the overall case study by focusing on the cases of Korea and China and combining them with a total of five overseas countries: the United States, France, Norway, the Netherlands, and Portugal. The study also outlines any limitations encountered during the research process. Accordingly, the results of this study are as follows. First, upon analyzing the components of complex cultural spaces, the predominant spaces identified include exhibition/performance space, educational space, rest space, commercial space, experience space, and management/office space. Notably, the analysis revealed a noticeable scarcity in both experience spaces and educational spaces within these complexes. Furthermore, it was observed that the commercial space within complex cultural spaces repurposed from idle industrial facilities predominantly consisted of singular space types, limited solely to cafes. This finding highlights a narrow range of commercial offerings within these cultural spaces. Second, the experience design within complex cultural spaces was categorized into two levels: user and spatial. Within the spatial dimension, the experiential elements of complex cultural spaces encompass a total of six elements: symbolism, historicity, continuity, complexity, variability, and openness. Upon examination, it was identified that the existing spatial configurations lack experience design elements related to history, continuity, openness, and variability. Specifically, there is a deficiency in preserving and repurposing structures, facilities, and materials with historical value. The connection between the present and the historical significance of the space is diminished due to the remodeling of idle industrial facilities. In certain instances, idle storage spaces, such as grain bins, have been transformed, resulting in a relatively enclosed appearance for the space. Furthermore, it was noted that the space lacks flexibility, hindering its ability to meet diverse purposes and the varied needs of users. Third, the user-level experiential elements within complex cultural spaces primarily encompass five dimensions: sensory, emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and relational experiences. A total of nine experience design elements are identified, including the sensitivity of sensory experiences, the originality and diversity of emotional experiences, the recognition and association of cognitive experiences, and the interactivity and accessibility of behavioral experiences, along with the continuity and mediation of relational experiences. Upon examination, it was determined that the complex cultural spaces repurposed from existing idle industrial facilities lack certain experience design elements related to originality, diversity, recognition, and association. Specifically, the investigation revealed a singular nature of experiential activities within the space, highlighting a deficiency in programs that cater to the individuality and creative needs of users. Furthermore, it was noted that the space lacks experiential programs and design elements that embody regional characteristics. The prevalence of popular and standardized experiential activity programs was found to negatively impact users' emotional experiences within the space. Fourth, following the verification of data obtained from user surveys, it was observed that users displayed a low frequency of engagement with idle industrial facilities, coupled with a short duration of stay within the spaces. An examination of the impact of experiential design elements on users revealed that users' evaluations of the symbolism associated with spatial-level experiential design elements in complex cultural spaces were the highest. Conversely, the evaluation of variability was rated the lowest. In essence, users express relatively high satisfaction with the experience design elements related to symbolism in complex cultural spaces, but there is room for improvement concerning design elements associated with spatial variability. Furthermore, among the user-level experience design elements applied to complex cultural spaces, interactivity received the highest evaluation, whereas cognitive ability received the lowest. This suggests that users are content with design elements and experiential activities promoting interactivity within complex cultural spaces, while design elements pertaining to cognitive recognition in the space need enhancemen As mentioned above, the complex cultural space, repurposed from idle industrial facilities, integrates diverse functions including exhibition, performance, education, rest, commerce, and experience. This synthesis results in a unique and multifaceted urban space, setting it apart from other urban environments. The space serves as a public venue capable of concurrently fulfilling users' sensory, emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and relational experiences through a rich array of cultural and artistic activities and design elements. Furthermore, the incorporation of regional characteristics and historical value within the space contributes to an enriched experience at both user and spatial levels. This approach effectively addresses the diverse purposes and needs of users while concurrently fostering the dissemination of local cultural and arts information. Additionally, it plays a pivotal role in the revitalization of associated industries. Therefore, this study identifies areas for improvement and suggests strategies for leveraging various elements of experience design. By examining them from both user and spatial perspectives, with a focus on the accessibility characteristics of experiential design elements in complex cultural spaces using idle industrial facilities, the study aims to enhance spatial experiences in future complex cultural spaces. Ultimately, the research holds significance in fostering opportunities for the sustainable development of idle industrial facilities.
