This study aims to categorize early childhood teachers’ metaphorical expressions regarding digital media and education using digital media through metaphor analysis and to investigate their perceptions through the frequency and type of metaphorical expressions. The research questions are as follows.
Research Question 1. What is the perception of early childhood teachers’ digital media and education using digital media examined through metaphor analysis?
1-1. What is the frequency of early childhood teachers’ metaphorical expressions toward digital media and education using digital media that appeared through metaphor analysis?
1-2. What is the meaning of metaphorical expressions regarding early childhood teachers’ digital media and education using digital media that appeared through metaphor analysis?
The study subjects were 227 early childhood teachers working in early childhood education sites (kindergarten, daycare center) for three, four, and five-year-old children. The study provided a metaphor expression survey containing ‘Digital media is because ’ and ‘Education using digital media is because .’ Of the 227 questionnaires collected, 220 were analyzed excluding 7 that had incomplete answers or did not provide all 5 answers for each question. 1,100 metaphorical expressions were collected for digital media and education using digital media. The collected data were used to derive the frequency and type of metaphor expressions following the five steps of metaphor analysis proposed by Gok and Erfogan (2010). Metaphorical expressions for ‘digital media’ were categorized into 1,052 metaphorical expressions with 48 out of 1,100 removed, and ‘education using digital media’ was categorized into 1,055 metaphorical expressions with 45 out of 1,100 removed. The following results were derived through this process. The characteristics of digital media were ‘diverse(N=29, 3.0%),’ ‘changing(N=17, 2.0%),’ and ‘dichotomous(N=178, 17.0%)’ digital media. As a tool in teachers’ lives, digital media are ‘necessities that make life more convenient(N=172, 16.0%),’ ‘experience(N=68, 6.0%),’ ‘communication(N=47, 4.0%),’ and ‘tool to acquire information(N=123, 12.0%).’ In addition, digital media as an instructional medium was ‘necessary of the times(N=95, 9.0%),’ ‘provides a variety of experiences(N=59, 6.0%),’ ‘helps develop children(N=53, 5.0%),’ ‘help with communication(N=12, 1.0%),’ and is ‘effective for teaching and learning(N=199, 19.0%).’ In summary, early childhood teachers perceive digital media not only as a necessity to make their lives convenient but also as an essential teaching medium for the times with a positive impact on the development of young children through communication and various experiences and as an effective medium for teaching and learning. Education using digital media was classified into three top categories: ‘positive(N=706, 66.9%),’ ‘negative(N=149, 14.1%),’ and ‘teachers’ role(N=200, 19.0),’ with 8 subcategories classified within. Early childhood teachers had a positive perception of education using digital media as ‘demanded by the times and to prepare for the future(N=247, 23.4%),’ ‘conveniently supports children’s play(N=204, 19.3%),’ and ‘highly-accessible play medium(N=255, 24.2%).’ On the contrary, they had a negative perception of digital media as a ‘burden from different perceptions of education using digital media(N=101, 9.6%),’ ‘difficulty in building an environment(N=23, 2.2%),’ and ‘difficulty in controlling the media(N=25, 2.4%). Next, the teacher role was perceived as ‘support based on children’s interests(N=57, 5.4%)’ and ‘challenge to develop future capabilities(N=143, 13.6%).’ In summary, early childhood teachers had a positive view of education using digital media and effectively recognized the importance of supporting the development of the interests and capabilities of young children living in the future. Moreover, they felt the need for the effort to improve their digital capabilities but had a negative view due to the burden caused by the different perceptions among the director, fellow teachers, and parents, and the difficulty in establishing a digital media environment and controlling the media. The study results are meaningful in that they provided implications to diversify and revitalize early childhood teachers’ training to use digital media and strengthen digital capabilities to improve their digital competency, guidance on how to use digital media, form a teacher learning community, and the support measures to establish and maintain a digital-based environment in early childhood education.
