Today, as lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are applied not only to small portable devices but also to large devices such as electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage systems (ESSs), demand for energy density is increasing. However, graphite anodes in current LIBs have several limitations in meeting the need because of their low specific capacity and initial irreversible capacity loss. In particular, an initial irreversible capacity loss is fatal from an economic point of view because a lithium source comes from the cathode material, which is the most expensive component of the battery. From this perspective, lithium (Li) metal is the most ideal anode material due to its high specific capacity and the lowest potential and infinite lithium source. However, practical implementation of Li metal faces challenges such as uncontrollable growth of Li dendrite and the formation of a weak solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Accordingly, the generation of dead Li, the depletion of an electrolyte, a short circuit occurs, and the cycle performance and cell stability are degraded. In this regard, Li-metal-based composites mixed with high Li-ion conductive components enable uniform Li growth thanks to its improved Li-ion migration and interfacial stability. In this thesis, Li composite anodes with high Li-ion conductivity were studied to stabilize Li-growth. The Li composite using Li-ion conducting Al-doped Li77La3Zr2O12 particles (Li/LLZO) was easily synthesized through a mechanical kneading process. In order to confirm dendrite inhibition in the Li-ionic conductive particle-based composite anode, which have been rarely reported before, this thesis dealt with a composite anode including LLZO particles that do not react with Li. The optimized composite with 20% LLZO content (Li/LLZO-20) effectively controls Li-ion flux, leading to the successful suppression of Li dendritic growth. Compared to the use of the Li/LLZO-0 anode without LLZO, the use of the Li/LLZO-20 anode resulted in significantly improved stability and reduced overpotential in Li plating/stripping tests of various current densities and capacities. Through systematic investigation, it was observed that the incorporation of LLZO particles provides significantly accelerated pathways for Li-ion migration at the electrode-electrolyte interface, facilitating smooth transport through the LLZO particles. As a result, Li-metal battery and Li-S battery cells utilizing the Li/LLZO composite anode exhibit remarkable cycle stability compared to cells employing pure Li anodes.
