The efficiency of fuel cells and metal-air batteries is significantly influenced by the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Enhancing the efficiency of fuel cells and metal-air batteries necessitates the utilization of suitable catalysts for the ORR/OER. While precious metal catalysts exhibit elevated activity in the ORR/OER, their high cost and low stability pose challenges. In this study, the electrochemical catalysts activity of transition metal oxides such as spinel and perovskite for ORR/OER was evaluated to replace precious metal catalysts. First, spinel structured Co3O4 and CoFe2O4 were fabricated into nanocomposite COCFO-NC-X via hydrothermal synthesis. The synthesized COCFO-NC-X improves the performance of electrochemical reactions due to lattice expansion, high specific surface area (SSA), and the oxygen vacancies, making it an efficient electrochemical catalyst for ORR/OER. Second, nanofibers of perovskite structure Sm0.5Sr0.5CoO3 were fabricated via electrospinning. The fabricated SSC-NF-X shows different fiber shapes depending on the calcination temperature. The ORR/OER activity and stability of the SSC-NF-X is attributed to the porous shape, high SSA, and oxygen vacancies. SSC-NF-1073 calcined at 1073 K is expected to be a promising electrochemical catalyst for both ORR/OER.
