Carbon (C) and Nitrogen (N) are pivotal elements, serving as primary sources of energy and essential components of human nutrition. However, the delicate balance of these elements in the environment has been significantly disrupted by anthropogenic activities, leading to the release of excessive nitrate (NO3−) and carbon dioxide (CO2). This disturbance carries profound implications, particularly concerning climate change and human health. To address this challenge and ensure sustainable management of the N- and C-cycles, electrochemical Nitrate Reduction Reaction (eNO3RR) and Carbon Dioxide Reduction Reaction (eCO2RR) have emerged as promising mitigation methods. This dissertation presents a comprehensive investigation into eNO3RR and eCO2RR, with a focus on enhancing reaction performance through innovative approaches such as new material development, modulation of operating conditions, and computational simulations. In the realm of eNO3RR for nitrate removal, the potential of bimetallic CuPd mixed oxides as electrocatalysts was explored. Leveraging the high hydrogen affinity of Pd alongside active metallic Cu sites, the selectivity and production rates of NH3 were significantly increased. The incorporation of Pd into Cu was found to create a conducive environment for the reduction of *NO2 to *NOOH, thereby reducing the required overpotential. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations highlighted that the *NO2 to *NOOH conversion is the rate-determining step, with Cu-Pd demonstrating a lower reduction potential (0.29 eV) compared to Cu (0.41 eV) for *NO2 hydrogenation, aligning with experimental results. This study proposes a promising strategy to decrease the energy demand for a crucial reaction step in NH3 production through eNO3RR. The insights gained contribute significantly to the formulation of catalyst design principles for energy-efficient NH3 production. In the context of developing the eCO2RR, this dissertation explores strategies involving environmental condition modulations and materials engineering. The investigation focuses on the role of water supply within the membrane electrode assembly (MEA), utilizing deuterium-labeled water experiments, and examining the impact of CO2 gas humidification through multi-physics-based Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. Through deuterium-labeled eCO2RR analysis, it was demonstrated that protons contributing to C2H4 production were predominantly supplied by the anolyte rather than the humidified CO2 in the MEA system. Nevertheless, the CFD simulation revealed humidification significantly influenced the water activity over the eCO2RR-dominant potential range, thereby affecting the kinetics of the CO2 reduction reaction to ethylene. In the field of materials engineering, a novel high molecular weight anion-conducting membrane, derived from polycarbazole, has been introduced. This membrane demonstrates outstanding ionic conductivity in the context of eCO2RR, resulting in elevated CO current densities (600 mA cm-2) and Faradaic efficiency (>90%) by promoting efficient ionic charge transfer. The incorporation of a chain extender proves instrumental in overcoming mechanical limitations. This enhancement not only allows for membrane thickness reduction while maintaining low water uptake but also facilitates water transport from the anolyte. The chain extender preserves the phase-separated morphology and well-defined ionic conductive channels within the polycarbazole-based anion exchange membrane, thereby improving the intrinsic kinetics of eCO2RR and ionic transport. Consequently, the membrane exhibits superior performance, even in conditions of reduced water activity, surpassing a commercially available membrane-applied MEA across all tested conditions. Furthermore, this dissertation explores the potential of polycarbazole-based anion-conducting ionomers featuring various cationic functional groups, which were employed to modify Ag catalysts for electrochemical assessment in the context of the eCO2RR. A systematic analysis of the impact of ionomer types and loadings on eCO2RR was conducted, revealing distinctive performance characteristics for different cationic functional groups. Notably, trimethylamine and trimethylphosphine cationic functional groups exhibited superior behavior, while tetramethylimidazolium showed intermediate behavior, and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane performed less favorably due to increased water diffusion. Through a comprehensive assessment of physical properties such as water uptake and potassium crossover, it was observed that 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane's extensive coverage led to reduced CO2 concentration. Imidazolium, on the other hand, exhibited low K+ crossover rates, indicating hindered double-layer formation. In situ spectroscopy further revealed that the cationic functional group could influence the chemistry of the eCO2RR, with tetramethylimidazolium impacting *COOH formation through a high kinetic isotope effect (KIE). Additionally, analysis with tetramethylimidazolium unveiled the prevalence of active water structures for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) compared to trimethylphosphine. Under modified conditions such as cell temperature and CO2 partial pressure, trimethylphosphine consistently demonstrated superior CO Faradaic Efficiencies and current density, highlighting the significance of intrinsic ionomer characteristics in diverse reaction environments. The electrochemical performance was meticulously evaluated and comprehensively correlated with variations in the reaction environment, as well as the physical and chemical modifications applied to the materials involved. This investigation yielded valuable insights into how adjustments in reaction conditions or targeted alterations in material properties impact the fundamental reduction reaction. The acquired knowledge serves as a foundation for establishing design principles essential for the development of efficient components like electrocatalysts, membranes, and ionomers within the system. By shedding light on the intricate dynamics of the reduction reaction, these studies provide guidance for future modifications aimed at enhancing the overall performance of the system.
