Recent studies have shed light on the pronounced need for ammonium, a vital component in the production of fertilizers as well as an alternative energy carrier. The liquid streams produced by the dehydration of anaerobically-digested solids in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), also known as "side-stream" or "rejected water," are often high in ammonia. Before bringing the rejected water into the primary treatment process, an appropriate approach for nitrogen removal and ammonia recovery from the rejected water is required. Currently, many technologies are under investigation to assess their effectiveness in nutrient removal and recovery. Electrodialysis (ED) is an innovative electrochemical membrane process that exhibits the capability to concentrate and separate ions found in wastewater. The electrochemical stripping (ECS) method is a very effective approach used for the retrieval of ammonium nitrogen from wastewater. The objective of this research study was to assess the efficacy of using ED and ECS techniques in the removal of nitrogen and recovery of ammonia from the rejected water generated from the anaerobic digester (AD). The study's results indicate that the implementation of a pilot ED system successfully accomplished the separation and enrichment of nitrogen and other ionic components present in the AD centrate. The findings demonstrated that 92.1% of the ammonium and 52.4% of the phosphate had been successfully eliminated. Additionally, with high applied voltage, steric hindrance effects were enhanced and concentration polarization resulted, which decreased cation migration. Furthermore, the successful retrieval of NH4 + from the AD centrate was efficiently accomplished by the use of the integrated methodologies of ED and ECS. Due to its ability to successfully raise the pH in the cathode compartment and convert NH4 + to NH3, cathodic feeding has been shown to be superior to anodic feeding. Using Na2HPO4, a triprotic acid salt, as an anolyte caused a quick pH increase due to pH buffering, which improved ammonia recovery. High current density supplied enough OH- to raise the pH of the cathode compartment. Using the EAS, ammonia was recovered to 90.5±0.4% from the ED concentrate in 5 hours at an energy consumption of 11.6 kWh/kg-NH3. ED technology is interesting since it can produce both a desalinated and a concentrated stream at the same time. ECS can recover ammonia without the use of a stripping tower or the addition of a base to raise pH levels in the cathode chamber. According to the findings, ECS combined with ED can successfully recover ammonia from the actual AD centrate in useful compounds such as ammonium sulfate and ammonium phosphate, both of which are extensively used as fertilizers. Furthermore, the ED-ECS approach consumes less energy, employs fewer chemicals, and generates no sludge. As a result, the ED-ECS technique is offered as a promising choice for nitrogen separation and ammonia recovery from high-strength wastewater, including the AD centrate.
