This was a descriptive research study to analyze college life adjustment, resilience, interpersonal competence, and clinical practice stress, and to identify factors that affect college life adjustment of nursing students. The subjects of this study were 206 nursing students with clinical practice experience in the department of nursing who understood and agreed to the purpose of the study. Data was collected from September 1 to September 12, 2023, with approval from the relevant institution. The research tool was a structured self-report questionnaire. The tool for college life adjustment by Jung & Park (2009), the tool for resilience by Yang et al. (2015), the tool for interpersonal competence by Buhrmester et al. (1988) were validated for Korean university students by Han & Lee (2010). and the tool for clinical practice stress by Beck & Srivastava (1991) was modified and supplemented by Kim & Lee (2005). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression with the SPSS Win version 27.0 program.
The results of this study were as follows.
1. The average score for college life adjustment was 3.51 points out of 5 points. The average score of resilience was 3.74 points out of 5 points. The average score of interpersonal competence was 3.45 points out of 5 points. The average score of clinical practice stress was 2.67 points out of 5 points. 2. College life adjustment according to the general characteristics of the subject was shown to have statistically significant differences on nursing selection motivation (t=-3.51, p=.001), major satisfaction (F=22.88, p<.001), last semester grades (F=5.67, p=.004), subjective health status (F=8.20, p<.001), and subjective economic status (F=12.46, p<.001). Resilience according to the general characteristics of the subject was shown to have statistically significant differences on nursing selection motivation (t=-2.95, p=.004), major satisfaction (F=26.70, p<.001), last semester grades (F=3.78, p=.025), subjective health status (F=18.36, p<.001), subjective economic status (F=11.49, p<.001), Interpersonal competence according to the general characteristics of the subject was shown to have statistically significant differences on nursing selection motivation (t=-3.47, p=.001), major satisfaction (F=6.57, p=.002), subjective health status (F=4.23, p=.016), and subjective economic status (F=17.21, p<.001). Clinical practice stress according to the general characteristics of the subject was shown to have statistically significant differences on grade (t=-3.88, p<.001), nursing selection motivation (t=3.81, p<.001), major satisfaction (F=5.42, p=.005), subjective health status (F=12.56, p<.001), and subjective economic status (F=4.19, p=.016). 3. College life adjustment showed a significant positive correlation with resilience (r=.72, p<.001) and interpersonal competence (r=.57, p<.001), and a significant negative correlation with clinical practice stress (r=-.30, p<.001). 4. College life adjustment was shown to be influenced by resilience (β=.55, p<.001), major satisfaction (β=-.15, p=.005), and interpersonal competence (β=.15, p=.036). The power of explanation for this modal was 54.0%.
It was found that resilience, major satisfaction, and interpersonal competence influenced college life adjustment among nursing students. Therefore, strategies to improve the resilience, major satisfaction, and interpersonal competence of nursing students will improve college life adjustment.
