본 연구는 최근 우리나라에서 '진중도서관 설치 운동'으로 이슈화되고 있는 병영도서관의 의의와 발전과정을 미국의 병영도서관을 중심으로 고찰하였다. 이를 위해 먼저, 미국의 병영도서관의 역사와 한국 전쟁동안에 있었던 미군의 병영도서관 활동을 살펴보고 분석하였다. 다음, 미국의 병영도서관 조직, 설치현황과 도서관서비스 프로그램 내용을 조사하였다.
