재평가와 처분은 1980년대까지만 하더라도 기록유산을 구성하는데 장애가 되는 개념으로 간주되었다. 그러나 기록물 보존에 드는 자원을 효율적으로 이용하고, 소장물의 초점이 잘 잡힌 기록관으로 유지하기 위해서는 과거의 평가 및 수집 결정을 재평가하는 절차가 필요하다는 인식이 최근 들어 아키비스트들의 공감대를 얻기 시작했다. 즉 이제는 기록관의 목적과 환경에 맞추어 기록물의 보존관리의 범위를 한정시키기 위해서는 지속적으로 기록물의 보존가치를 평가하고 처분해야 할 것이다. 본 연구는 보존되고 있는 기록물에 대한 재평가 및 처분에 대한 여러 학자들의 견해를 고찰하여 보존관리 업무에서의 그 역할을 분석하고 재평가와 처분이 보존관리 기능으로 수행될 때 도움이 될 수 있는 재평가의 원칙과세 가지 처분업무 즉 원소유자로의 반환, 다른 기록관으로 이관, 폐기에 대한 업무 프로세스를 제시하였다.
