본 연구는 대학도서관의 효과적인 공간 활용과 이용자서비스를 위해 미국을 중심으로 90년대 이후 점차 확산되고 있는 Information Commons의 국내 대학도서관 적용 방안을 모색하고자 하였다. 도서관의 정보와 전자자원을 통합 제공함으로써 이용자들의 연구 및 과제와 관련된 모든 작업을 한 장소에서 수행할 수 있도록 하기 위한 Information Commons는 이용자 및 정보환경의 변화를 경험하고 있는 국내 대학도서관에도 적용을 고려할 필요가 있다. Information Commons 도입에 따른 문제를 최소화하고 효과를 극대화하기 위해서는 설치 이전에 PC실, 멀티미디어실, 교육장, 개인용 및 그룹용 스터디룸, 그리고 까페 라운지 등의 물리적요소와 참고질문 및 정보기술문제의 해결을 통해 Information Commons를 효과적으로 운영할 수 있고 정보활용교육을 수행할 수 있는 인적요소에 대한 확보가 필수적인 것으로 조사되었다.
