A 3-year-old female Thoroughbred racehorse was presented following the accidental oral and skin administration of amitraz. This case report describes the clinical signs and the treatment of this horse. Clinical signs of amitraz toxicosis are associated with the stimulation of alpha2-adrenergic receptors. Amitraz is seldom fatal because the effects can be reversed by alpha2-adrenergic antagonists. The horse displayed typical clinical signs of colic, including pawing, small hard drops, tranquillisation, depression, ataxia, muscular incoordination and impaction colic lasting up to 7 days. The syndrome was accompanied by mild dehydration. The horse survived after persistent symptomatic treatment, including the giving of intravenous fluids, antibiotics, multiple doses of mineral oil per os, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and dexamethasone intramuscularly and intravenously.

말의 상태는 폐색성 산통증상 뿐만 아니라 일반 산통증상과는 다르게 머리를 아래로 떨어뜨리고 몸이 움직이지 않는 등의 심한 진정효과가 하루에 수차례 반복되었고 기면, 운동실조 및 사지불균형(muscular incoordination)이일반 산통보다 정도가 매우 심하여 술후 회복하여 걸어가는 말의 행동과 같았다. 이상을 종합한 결과 alpha-2 adrenergic agonist 효과를 나타내었기에 진드기 살충제에 들어있는 amitraz 중독으로 판단하여 수액 (Safe-Flex Hartmann's solution; CJ, 한국), 종합비타민제(콤비콤씨 Inj.; 대성미생물연구소, 한국) 및 해독제 (Hepagen; Ozzano Emilia, Italy) 등으로 치료를 시작하였다. 치료 5일째의 임상병리검사에서는 혈당이 600mg/ dL, T-bilirubin이 3.

대상 데이터

Thoroughbred 경주마(암, 3세 , 한국산)가 부산경남경 마 공원에 입사하였고, 활발한 건강상태를 보였으나 피모에 다수의 진드기가 관찰되어 마필관리사는 수 년 전부터 사용해 온 진드기 살충제인 그린틱스(amitraz 12.5 g, N, N-dimethylacetamide, ethylan, xylene; 녹십자수의 약품주식히사, 한국)를 물에 희석 (1 : 30)하여 약 10 L 정도를 얼굴을 제외한 전신피부에 도포하였고, 말이 피부에 묻은 약물을 핥아먹는 것을 관찰하였다. 다음 날 그 경주마가 갑작스런 산통이 발생하여 KRA부산동물병원에 내원하였다.

본 증례는 Thoroughbred 경주마가 amitraz 성분의 살충제를 전신피부에 도포 후 경구 및 피부로 흡수되어 식욕부진 및 변비 등 산통증상 이외에 심한 기면, 운동실조 및 사지불균형 등의 alpha-2 adrenergic agonist 효과를 나타내는 등 심한 임상증상이 일반적인 산통과 비교되었다. 임상병리검사에서는 혈당, T-bilirubin, ALP가 증가 하였으며 끌기운동, 수액 및 소염제 등으로 7일간 치료하자 건강이 회복되었다.
