A book index is a locater system that ordinarily connects a set of terms from a text of a book to the page where they occur in the book's text. 	DDC의 상관색인에 관한 이론적 연구의 결과는?	첫째, 1876년에 발행된 DDC 1판에서 색인은 ‘주제색인’이었으며, 1855년에 발행된 제2판에서는 ‘상관주제색인’이란 명칭을 사용하였다. ‘상관(relative)’이란 명칭은 제2판에서 기원한다. 둘째, DDC 색인에서 채택하고 있는 색인 시스템은 ‘주제상관색인’이다. 상관색인은 본표나 보조표와는 정반대로 ‘표목 + 관점 + 분류기호’로 구성되어 있다. 상관색인은 기본적으로 각 표목아래 알파벳순으로 배열된다. 알파벳순 색인은 분류표상에서 용어의 위치를 정해주고, 주제의 관련된 관점을 모아주고, 다시 분류된 순서에 의해 분산된다. 색인은 ‘분류표의 체계적인 순서에 대한 알파벳순 키’이다. 셋째, 동일한 단어나 어구를 갖고 있으나 서로 다른 구두점이 부가된 표목들은 다음과 같은 순서로 배열한다. 1) 용어, 2) 용어, 부표목, 3) 용어(괄호안의 수식어), 4) 용어, 도치형 수식어, 5) 어구의 일부를 이루는 용어 순이다. 넷째, DDC가 문헌분류이론에 끼친 공헌의 하나로 일컬어지는 것은 상관색인이다. 즉 DDC탄생만큼 중요한 가치성을 지니고 있다. 그래서 또 다른 발명품이라고도 한다. 이것은 분산된 관련항목, 즉 분류표 전체에 걸쳐 각 학문분야로 분산되어 있는 동일한 주제에 관한 서로 다른 관점들을 함께 모아주는 기능을 한다. 단 색인을 사용하여 분류기호를 부여할 경우, 반드시 본표에의 계층구조상에서의 주제의 위치가 정확한지를 대조확인 하여야 한다. 즉 , ‘색인어 ￫ 기호 ￫ 본표’ 순으로 확인하여야 한다. DDC에서 상관색인 특정 주제에 대해 색인어가 나오고 그에 따른 분야와 부분적 특성에 관한 부분이 하위 계층으로 설정됨으로써 자신이 찾고자하는 주제에 좀 더 접근하기 쉽게 나타내고 있다. 다섯째, 색인은 ‘단어 ￫ 기호 ￫ 본표’, ‘단어 ￫ 기호 ￫ 자료’의 양쪽 기능을 가지고 있다. 현재의 DDC의 색인에는 각종 참조가 채용되어 색인만으로 특정주제의 본표안의 위치나 자료로 직접 접근할 수 없는 경우도 많다. 그러나 컴퓨터로 입력된 서지데이터의 검색에 관해서는 ‘단어 ￫ 기호 ￫문헌’이라는 과정에 따른 접근은 주제에 의한 검색의 유력한 수단이 된다고 생각한다. 여섯째, 색인의 기능은 첫째, 저록어(색인어)에 분류기호를 부여해 본표상의 주제의 위치를 지시하여 주고 본표상의 주제어에 대한 접근점의 수단으로서의 기능, 둘째, 전문가가 분류한 것과 같은 정확한 분류결과를 얻을 수 있는 기능, 셋째, 특정 주제에 관해 일관성 있는 기호를 부여할 수 있는 기능, 마지막으로 분류기호 부여의 노력이 절감된다. 마지막으로 상관색인의 구조에는 1) ‘명사’, ‘형용사- 명사’, ‘명사 - 명사’의 형태를 저록어의 기본적인 형태로 한다. 2) 보통명사는 복수형을 저록어로 한다. 단수형의 명사는 형용사적으로 사용해서 ‘형용사 - 명사형’의 저록어가 된다. 3) ‘형용사 - 명사’의 저록어는 직접형으로 배열한다.
