부부관계를 연구하는 데 있어서 결혼만족도가 매우 중요한 변인인 이유는? 가트만(Gottman)의 연구에 따르면 불행한 결혼으로 인해 질병 발생률이 높아지고, 수 명이 단축되었다고 하였다. 결국 만족스러운 결혼생활이 부부들의 심리적 고통에 대한 완충 역할을 하며(Karney & Bradbury, 1995), 이혼의 가장 큰 예측 변인 중 하나가 결혼만족임을 알 수 있다. 이처럼 부부관계를 연구하는데 있어서 결혼만족도는 매우 중요한 변인이며, 지속적으로 부부의 결혼만족도에 영향을 미치는 변인에 대한 연구가 이루어지고 있는데 결혼만족도에 대한 다측면적인 연구들이 이루어져야할 필요가 있다.
