고부갈등이란? 고부갈등이란 가정에서 비슷한 지위와 역할을 갖는 시어머니와 며느리 사이에서 상반되는 견해 및 이해의 차이로 인해 발생하는 감정적 대립을 말한다. 고부관계는 결혼에 의해 혈연이 아닌 타인끼리 한 남성을 매개로 가족 관계가 맺어지고, 가정 내 역할이 유사하여 갈등의 소지가 많아진다고 본다.
우리나라는 어떠한 특징으로인해 고부간 갈등의 소지가 많나? 특히 여성은 결혼을 통하여 자기의 기원으로부터 분리되는 단절을 경험하고 낯선 집안 환경에 편입되어 남편의 집안 가풍에 맞춰 살 것을 요구받기 때문이다(Kim, 2002). 또한 한국은 유교적 가치관의 영향으로 시댁에 대한 다양한 요구와 의무가 존재하고, 남녀 성역할의 구분이 강화되는 등 구조적 특징으로 인하여 갈등의 소지가 많다(Bae, 1996). 전통사회에서 고부관계는 효 의식을 바탕으로 며느리의 절대적인 복종과 인내를 요구하였기에 갈등을 표면화할 수 없었지만, 핵가족 확대, 효 의식의 약화, 며느리의 교육수준 향상 등으로 과거 순종과 인내로 유지되어 온 고부관계가 더 이상 유지할 수 없게 되면서 고부간의 갈등이 표면화되었다(Kwon, 2004).
