이 연구는 이용자가 기록을 쉽게 '발견'하고, 기록의 의미를 이해할 수 있도록 지원하는 온라인 검색가이드의 설계방향을 모색하기 위한 것이다. 이를 위해 영국, 미국, 호주, 우리나라 국립보존기록관들의 검색가이드 사례를 분석하였다. 가이드의 명칭과 접근 방식, 개발 대상과 범주, 구조와 연계정보를 중심으로 조사하였고, 이를 다시 접근성, 다양성, 체계성, 일관성, 연계성 측면에서 종합적으로 분석하였다. 이를 토대로 국가기록원이 검색가이드를 개발할 때 고려해야 할 사항을 제시하였다.
