인체에서 타우린은 어떤 곳에 많이 존재하는가? 포유동물 조직에서 타우린은 백혈구에 50 mM 수준으로 가장 많고, 심장, 망막, 근골격에도 함유되어 있다(Heller-Stilb 등 2002). 인체에서는 망막, 골격근, 심장 근육, 뇌하수체, 혈소판, 림프아세포, 신장 조직에 상대적으로 많은 양이 존재하는 것으로 알려져 있다(Kendler BS 1989). 체내에서 혈중 타우린의 평균 농도는 45 μM 수준이며(Vinton 등 1987), 인체에서 가장 풍부한 아미노산의 일종으로 면역체계 유지, 삼투압 조절, 망막 및 신경계 발달, 세포 칼슘농도 조절 및 항산화 활성 등 다양하고 중요한 역할을 수행한다(Grimble RF 2006).
