지난 반세기 동안 인간 심리에 대한 연구는 많은 연구 도구들의 창출을 가져왔다. 눈에 보이지 않는 심리 현상을 객관화하기 위한 노력의 일환으로 다양한 검사도구들이 개발되었고 이러한 흐름은 인간 심리에 대한 양화된 자료의 양산을 가져왔다. 그러나 인간 경험의 주관성과 세밀함을 고려해 보건데 개인의 독특한 경험 세계와 이를 해석하는 관점에 대한 연구가 병행되어야만 한다. 본 논문은 이런 맥락에서 인간의 심리를 탐구하는 도구로 사진을 제안하고, 사진의 연구도구 가능성을 타진해보았다. 스마트폰의 확산과 함께 파고든 사진 찍기 일상은 사진이라는 예술활동을 대중 친화적으로 만들었고, 만약 이러한 사진 찍는 활동이 인간의 심리를 탐구하는 연구도구로서의 기능을 충실히 수행한다면 인간에 대한 이해의 깊이와 넓이는 획기적인 전기를 맞이하게 될 것이다. 사진이 인간의 주관적인 경험과 해석을 얼마나 충실히 담아내는지를 검토하기 위하여 대학생 두 명의 우정에 대한 사진을 소개하였고 이를 바탕으로 사진의 연구도구 가능성을 피력하였다.
