우리나라에서 에이즈에 대한 인식은 어떠한가? | 에이즈는 전 세계적으로 낙인과 차별이 심한 질병 중 하나이다. 우리나라의 경우에도 국민들의 인식 속에 에이즈는 여전히 ‘죽음’이나 ‘불치병’과 같은 막연한 두려움과 공포가 연상되는 질병이고, 특히 사회적인 낙인과 에이즈 환자에 대한 부정적인 태도가 만연되어 있다[1]. 그러므로 에이즈 환자를 포함하는 좀 더 포괄적인 의미인 HIV 감염인들은 자신의 감염 사실이 노출됨으로써 가족, 친구, 동료 및 사회로부터 자신의 평가가 절하되는 것을 두려워하여 감염 사실을 숨기며 자신을 스스로 소외시키는 경향이 있다[2]. | |
HIV 감염인들은 어떤 경향을 보이는가? | 우리나라의 경우에도 국민들의 인식 속에 에이즈는 여전히 ‘죽음’이나 ‘불치병’과 같은 막연한 두려움과 공포가 연상되는 질병이고, 특히 사회적인 낙인과 에이즈 환자에 대한 부정적인 태도가 만연되어 있다[1]. 그러므로 에이즈 환자를 포함하는 좀 더 포괄적인 의미인 HIV 감염인들은 자신의 감염 사실이 노출됨으로써 가족, 친구, 동료 및 사회로부터 자신의 평가가 절하되는 것을 두려워하여 감염 사실을 숨기며 자신을 스스로 소외시키는 경향이 있다[2]. 그런데 에이즈 관련 낙인과 차별은 HIV 감염인 자신 뿐 만 아니라 ‘침묵의 피해자(silent casualties)’[3]라고 일컬어지는 HIV 감염인의 가족에게도 부정적인 영향을 미친다[4,5]. |
