정신건강과 관련된 초기 연구는 무엇에 근거하여 진행되었는가 정신건강과 관련된 초기 연구는 질병이나 고통이 없는 상태가 건강이라고 보는 질병 모델에 근거하여 진행되었으며 이러한 접근은 정신건강에 대하여 정신질환의 유무로 판단하기 때문에 일반 대학생들에게 이와 같은 기준을 적용하는 것은 적절하지 않다. 따라서 세계보건기구 (World Health Organization, WHO)의 정의와 같이 단순히 질병의 유무가 아닌 ‘정신적, 심리적 안녕 상태’로 보는 것이 적합할 것이다(WHO, 2016).
정신건강의 위기를 초래할 수 있는 요인에는 어떤 것들이 있는가 초기 성인기인 대학생은 정해진 시간표에 따른 수업참여와 보호자의 동의가 필요한 중・고등학교시기에 비해 일상생활에서부터 학교생활까지 스스로 결정하고 선택하는 자율성과 선택에 따른 책임이 증가하게 된다. 또한 정체성 의확립,사회적 독립과 더불어 취업 난에 따른 미래에 대한 불안감, 등록금과 같은 경제적 문제 등 다양한 스트레스 요인과 복잡한 심리사회적 과제가 정신건강의 위기를 초래할 수 있다. 따라서 자신의 건강한 정신건강의 유지와 더 나은 삶을 위한 의식적인 노력과 함께 각자의 생각과 목소리를 표현할 수 있는 다양한 기회가 제공되어야 한다.
