우리나라 치매환자 유병율은? 우리나라는 전체 인구에서 차지하는 65세 이상의 인구수가 빠르게 증가함으로써 2017년에 고령 사회에 진입하게 되었으며,(Statistics Korea,2017:3) 이러한 고령화의 추세는 기대수명이 점점 높아지는 반면 젊은 층의 인구가 절벽과 같이 떨어지는 인구절벽을 통해 지속적으로 가속화되고 있다. 세계보건기구인 WHO가 1994년부터 국제질병사인분류(ICD-10)에서 질병으로 규정하기 시작한 치매를 앓는 고령자는 폭발적으로 늘어가고 있어서, 2017년 우리나라 치매환자의 유병률은 9.94%에 이르고 있다.(National Institute of Dementia,2017:14) 한편 치매노인을 위한 치료적 환경(therapeutic environment)은 시각, 청각, 후각 및 촉각 요소를 제공함으로써 감각을 자극하는 '통합감각자극환경‘(multi-sensory stimulation environment)을 통한 접근이 필요한데, 특히 인간이 감지하는 정보의 87% 정도를 시각을 통해 습득하기 때문에 시각적 감각 자극과 관련된 치료환경요소로서의 빛과 색채는 매우 중요하다고 할 수 있다.
