Turner (2005)이 모래놀이치료에서의 정신의 변화과정을 탐색하기 위해 제시한 네 가지 주제는 무엇인가? 이런 주제를 살펴봄으로써 모래상자가 어떠한 과정에 관한 것인지 파악할 수 있다. 첫째, 내용주제는 모래상자에 놓은 소품(일상세계의 소품, 고대, 원시문화의 소품, 영적세계를 나타내는 소품, 환상적인 소품, 숫자와 색), 우화나 신화적인 주제, 연금술 같은 변환의 패러다임과 마른 모래나 젖은 모래 사용, 파란 바닥 드러내기 등 모래로 만든 형태 등을 탐색하는 것이다. 두 번째, 공간주제는 모래놀이과정에 포함된 여러 요소 간의 공간적 관계를 살핀다. 세 번째, 동작주제는 모래놀이치료 전체과정뿐 아니라 개개 모래상자를 만드는 동안 소품이나 모래를 흩뿌리거나 하는 움직임 등을 살핀다. 마지막, 정서주제는 모래놀이치료 과정에서의 감정과 정서를 탐색한다.
