인상주의 회화가 주로 다룬 소재는 무엇인가? 인상주자들은 잘 알려진 것처럼 19세기 중후반에 활동하며 햇빛 아래에서 변하는 자연을 직관적으로 그렸을 뿐 아니라, 전통적인 주제와 기교에 얽매이지 않고 파리라는 도시의 구석구석을 그렸다(Lee, 2011). 인상주의 회화는 새로 건설된 파리의 대로, 기차, 카페 등 모더니티를 보여주는 도시의 일상적 정경을 플라뇌르(flâneur: 특별한 목적 없이 도시를 천천히 산책하는 19세기의 취미적 행동)의 시각으로 다루었다(Chun, 2011). 인상주의 화가들만큼 도시인들의 자유로운 여가생활, 개인의 삶, 여성을 테마로 그린 화파는 없을 것이다.
