  • For soil samples, we used the non-flooded Petri dish culture method (Foissner et al., 2002). Freshwater and seawater samples were filtered with 200 μm nylon mesh and then were transferred to Petri dishes with rice or wheat grains to enrich growth of bacteria and bacteriovorous flagellates recognized as a food source for ciliates.
