본 연구는 대학생의 상담 관련 강의 수강 경험과 전공에 따라 공감능력과 감성지능이 차이를 보이는지 알아보는데 목적이 있다. 연구대상은 경기도 소재 대학의 대학생 313명이며, 가설 검증을 위해 통계적 분석 방법으로 독립표본 t검정과 일원배치 분산분석 및 Duncan의 사후검정을 실시하였다. 연구 결과, 대학생의 공감능력은 성별, 전공, 상담관련 강의 수강 경험에 따라 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 대학생의 감성지능은 성별, 상담 관련 강의 수강 경험에 따라 차이가 있었다. 공감능력은 여자가 남자보다, 사회과학대학이 과학기술융합대학보다, 상담교육을 받은 학생이 받지 않은 학생보다 높게 나타났고, 감성지능은 여자가 남자보다, 상담교육을 받은 학생이 받지 않은 학생보다 높게 나타났다. 연구결과, 현재의 상담교육의 효과성은 확인할 수 있었으나, 전공에 따른 감성지능의 차이가 나타나지 않았다는 점에서 이론적 교육의 한계를 확인할 수 있었고, 교육을 통해 향상시킬 수 있는 공감능력이 현재의 커리큘럼으로 향상되지 못했다는 결과를 통해 실습 혹은 예술 매체 활용 등 상담 관련 교육 커리큘럼을 수정 혹은 보완해야 할 필요성을 부각시켰다는 점에서 본 연구의 의의를 찾을 수 있다.

This study examined whether there are differences in the empathic ability and emotional intelligence by college students' counseling course-taking experience and major. The research subjects were 313 college students, and an independent sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Duncan post-hoc test were conducted for hypothesis testing. A difference in empathic ability was observed according to the students' sex, major, and counseling course-taking experience. A difference in emotional intelligence according to their sex and counseling course-taking experience was noted. Empathic ability was higher in females than in males, higher in the school of social sciences than in the school of science and technology, and higher in those who had counseling education than in those who did not. Emotional intelligence was higher in women than in men, and higher in students who had counseling education than in those who did not. Consequently, the effectiveness of counseling education was confirmed. On the other hand, a limitation of theoretical education was found in that there was no difference in emotional intelligence according to the major. Although empathic ability can be improved by education, the current curriculum has not improved it. This study has significance that it emphasizes the need for supplementing the curriculum, like practice or utilizing art media.

이들은 국제적으로 통용되는 용어 정의의 문제는 앞으로의 연구를 통해 해결해야 한다고 주장하였다. 본 연구에서는 Wong & Law[18]의 관점에 따라 Emotional Intelligence를 감성지능으로 사용하였다.
공감능력척도는 박성희[25]가 번역한 Davis[4]의 대인관계 반응지수(Inter- personal Reactivity Index:IRI)를 전체 28문항 구성하였다. 하위요인 4개이고, 하요인에 따른 문항 수는 각각 7문항이다.

성능/효과

연구문제를 중심으로 주요 결과를 요약하고 논의하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 대학생의 성별, 전공, 상담수강 경험여부에 따라 공감능력에 차이가 있었다. 하지만 공감능력의 하위요인 중 관점 취하기는 어떤 변수에서도 차이를 보이지 않았다.
성별에 따라서는 공감능력의 하위요인인 정서적 공감에서 남학생에 비해 여학생이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 성별과 공감능력의 관계를 탐구한 선행연구에서 성별에 따른 공감능력의 차이가 있다는 결과와 일치되는 것으로 보인다[28][29][30][31][32][33].
전공에 따라서는 공감능력의 차이가 크게 나타났으며, 사회과학대학이 과학기술융합대학보다 높게 나타났다. 이 결과는 여학생과 인문학 전공학생의 공감능력이 남학생과 이공계 학생보다 높게 나타난다는 선행연구를 지지하는 것이다[35][36].
상담수강 경험이 있는 경우 공감능력이 높게 나타났는데, 이는 교육을 통해 정서적 공감, 그 중에서도 공감적 관심을 학습할 수 있다는 결과로 해석할 수 있다. 부모의 교육과 양육 방식에 따라 자녀의 공감능력이 향상되거나[38], 공감교육 또는 공감훈련 등의 교육프로그램[39] 등의 효과로 나타나듯 공감능력은 학습을 통해 향상될 수 있다.
둘째, 대학생의 성별, 전공, 상담수강경험여부에 따른 감성지능의 차이는 상담수강 경험이 없는 학생보다 상담수강 경험이 있는 학생의 감성지능이, 하위요인 중에서는 자기감성이해와 감성활용이 높게 나타났다.
전공에 따라서는 감성지능의 차이가 나타나지 않았다. 본 연구에 참여한 사회과학대학 학생의 주전공이 사회복지학으로, 상담 관련 필수과목이 존재함에도 전공 간 감성지능의 차이가 없다는 결과는 현재의 커리큘럼을 통해서는 감성지능을 함양하기 어렵다고 볼 수 있다.

후속연구

공감능력 또한 감성지능과 연관되어 있으므로, 적절한 교육 방법을 찾는다면 공감능력과 감성지능 양 측면에서 좋은 성과를 거둘 수 있을 것이다. 특히, 이론 중심의 현 커리큘럼에 대한 한계가 본 연구를 통해 드러났으므로, 벽화를 활용한 집단상담 프로그램이 감성지능에 유의한 정의 영향(F=46.92, p<.001)을 준 선행연구[44]에 기반하여 영화[45], 미술[46], 음악[47], 연극[48] 등 공감능력과 감성지능을 향상시키는 효과가 검증된 다양한 예술 매체를 활용하는 프로그램을 개발하여 교육 현장에 적용하고 검증해 볼 것을 제안해 본다.
시대에 따라 변화해가는 대학생들의 성향을 반영하여 커리큘럼에 다양한 매체를 활용한다면 그 효과가 더 클 것이라고 예상된다. 따라서 후속 연구에서는 커리큘럼에 사용한 매체에 따른 감성지능과 공감능력의 차이를 비교하는 연구도 유의미할 것으로 보인다.

	상담이란 무엇인가?	상담이란 도움이 필요한 내담자와 전문적 훈련을 받은 상담자의 관계를 통해 생활에서 발생하는 문제의 해결 및 생각과 행동, 감정 등을 조절, 성장할 수 있도록 학습하는 과정으로 정의된다[1]. 상담교육을 통해 자기성찰의 기회를 제공받게 되므로 상담교육의 보편화는 좋은 현상이라 보겠다.
