이 연구는 사서직 전문성에 대한 사서와 이용자 그룹의 인식을 파악하고 그 차이를 이해하며, 이를 통해 사서직의 나아갈 방향을 제시함을 그 목적으로 한다. 먼저 이론적 고찰을 통해 사서직 전문성의 구성요소를 도출하고 이를 토대로 사서와 이용자를 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 그 결과, 사서는 사서직 전문성에서 전문적 지식을 가장 중요한 요소로 인식하였고, 이용자는 이용자에 대한 서비스적 태도를 가장 중요한 요소로 인식하였다. 이용자는 사서직 전문성에서 사서가 즐거움, 열정, 도전정신이 부족하고 이용자의 요구를 이해하고 지식의 흐름을 이해하여 서비스를 개발하고 제공하는 능력이 부족하여 사회적 인정이 낮다고 인식하고 있었고, 사서는 전문적 지식에의 자신 없음으로 이용자와의 소통이나 교류에 적극 나서지 못하는 것으로 나타났다.
