본 연구에서는 전통적인 방법으로 재현한 전통 명유, 전통 명유를 과학적으로 분석하여 친환경적인 방법으로 개발한 크린 명유, 그리고 명유의 원료이자 현재 목조문화재를 보수할 때 단청의 마감제로 사용되고 있는 생들기름의 방미효력을 평가하였다. 평가 결과, 생들기름은 방미효력이 거의 없는 것으로 나타난 반면에, 두 종류의 명유는 모두 높은 성능의 방미효력을 보였다. 하지만, 명유를 천연용제인 테르펜유에 희석하여 사용하면 균주에 노출된 지 4주 만에 방미효력이 현저히 감소하는 것을 확인 할 수 있었다. 목재에 처리된 약제의 함량이 명유의 방미효력에 영향을 주는 것으로 판단된다. 즉, 목조건축물을 축조함에 있어서 명유가 들기름보다 곰팡이 발생을 억제하기 위한 마감제로 더 적합하며, 야외 환경에서의 곰팡이 성장 억제를 저해 할 수 있는 최적의 처리량 및 처리 방법에 대한 추가 연구를 통하여 명유의 적용 가능성을 높힐 수 있을 것으로 생각한다.
