성매개 질환(STD)이 성매개 감염(STI)이라고 불리게된 이유는 무엇인가? | 성병은 그 후 1975년 WHO에 의해 “성매개 질환”으로 불리면서 성접촉에 의해 전파되는 질환이라는 포괄적인 의미를 가지게 되었다. 그러나 질병(disease)이라는 용어는 감염 여부와 상관없이 병적 상태를 나타내는 단어이기 때문에 STD라는 용어의 사용으로는 이들 질병이 성접촉에 의하여 전파되는 병원체에 의한 감염증을 제대로 표현할 수 없다. 따라서 최근에는 이들 질병의 역학적 특성인 성접촉에 의하여 전파되며 임상증상이나 병변의 유무에 관계없이 병원체의 전파에 의한 감염증이라는 사실을 표현할 수 있는 용어로 증상과 징후를 가지고 있지 않은 무증상 감염도 포함하는 의미에서 “성매개 감염”(sexually transmitted infections, STI)이라고 흔히 불리고 있다.
