본 연구는 국내 대학도서관의 공동보존서고 설립 및 운영을 위한 기초 자료로서, 미국의 대표적인 공동보존서고 ReCAP(Research Collections and Preservation Consortium)의 운영 사례를 통해 국내 적용 가능한 공동보존서고 설립 및 운영 방안을 제시하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 ReCAP 공동보존서고 및 참여기관인 콜럼비아대학교 도서관, 프린스턴대학교 도서관, 뉴욕공공도서관, 하버드대학교 도서관을 방문 조사하였고, ReCAP 업무 담당 전문가를 대상으로 심층인터뷰를 실시하였다. 분석 결과, 공동보존서고는 보존시설에 대한 공유에서 공유 장서(shared collection)와 공유 이용(shared use)으로 확대 발전된 것으로 나타났다. 하지만 장기적인 공동관리를 위한 시스템 구축 및 초기 예상보다 빠른 보존공간의 한계에 따른 이관자료지침수립 및 공동장서개발 정책 수립 등의 필요성이 제기되었다.
