본 연구에서는 미래의 공공도서관의 역할 및 기능에 대한 이용자와 사서의 인식을 설문조사를 통해 실증적으로 분석하고, 이를 기반으로 미래 공공도서관의 발전 방향을 수립하는데 고려해야 하는 사항들을 제언하였다. 분석 결과, 사서와 이용자 모두 콘텐츠가 미래 공공도서관의 운영에 있어서 가장 중요한 것으로 나타났다. 또한 이용자들은 사서에 비해 정보서비스의 중요성을 보다 높게 인식하는 것으로 나타나, 미래 공공도서관에서는 다양한 정보서비스의 개발이 필요함을 보여주고 있다. 반면 최신 정보기술의 도입은 미래 공공도서관에서 상대적으로 그 중요성에 대한 인식이 낮게 나타나, 정보기술의 도입보다는 콘텐츠의 이용이나 정보요구를 충족시킬 수 있는 다양한 경로와 도구의 마련이 보다 중요한 것으로 나타났다.
