이 연구의 목적은 베이비부머의 노후생활을 풍요롭게 만들기 위한 국가적 노력의 일환으로 도서관계가 마땅히 수행해야할 책무와 기능에 대해 논의하는 것이다. 연구의 초점은 노후기에 접어든 베이비부머의 일상을 힘들고 불안하게 만드는 '장애물'을 찾아내는 과정과 그러한 장애물을 제거하기 위한 도서관의 서비스 전략을 모색하는 과정에 주어졌다. 이를 위해 먼저, 베이비부머의 의식세계에 내재하는 일상적 고민을 추적하고 그러한 고민에 대처하는 과정에서 불거지는 정보행태의 특징을 파악하였다. 이때 기존의 고령자와는 다른 베이비부머만의 집단적 특징을 밝혀내는데 주력하였다. 이어서, 베이비부머에게서 나타나는 정보빈곤의 보편적 양상과 구체적 실태를 찾아내고 정보빈곤을 유발하고 구조화하는 요인에 대해 분석하였다. 이때 정보의 공급자보다는 소비자의 시각에서 논의를 진행하였다. 마지막으로, 베이비부머의 정보빈곤을 완화하기 위한 사회적 노력에 도서관계가 앞장서야 하는 이유에 대해 설명하고, 한국 도서관계의 역량을 고려한 도서관서비스의 개발 전략을 제안하였다.
