연구 목적 : 영적 지도는 한 개인이 개발하고 발전시킨 창작물이 아니라 교회와 성도 그리고 사회와 시대 상황을 포함하는 역사적 산물로 볼 수 있다. 본 연구는 영적 지도의 기원과 역사적 변화과정을 통해 영적 지도에서 어떤 사회적 차원을 발견하고 논할 수 있는지 탐구고자 한다. 연구 내용 및 방법 : 본 연구는 영적 지도와 관련된 사회 변화 중에서 은둔 수도자와 공주 수도자들의 수도원 운동과 이냐시오와 루터를 중심으로 논의되는 종교 개혁에 주목한다. 이 두 사회적 변화를 살펴보면서 영적 지도의 발생과 변화가 지시하는 영적 지도의 사회적 차원을 분석하고 그 의미에 대해 논한다. 기독교가 공인되는 시점을 전후해 수도원 운동이 발생하기 시작하고, 알렉산드리아의 주교였던 아타나시우스는 수도자적 삶에 대한 자신의 이상(ideal)을 확산시킴과 동시에 교회와 수도원 운동의 연합을 추구했다. 이러한 과정에서 영적 훈련이나 지도의 모습이 상호 작용하고 변화하게 된다. 종교 개혁 시기에 신교(新敎)는 구교(舊敎)의 영적 전통에서 벗어나 자신만의 새로운 영적 교육과 훈련을 형성해 나가기 시작하고, 구교는 새로운 영적 지도의 개념과 실천을 통해 갱신을 추구한다. 현재 영적 지도는 개인과 사회가 상호작용하고 사회와 사회가 영향을 주고 받으며 기독교 내에서 성도의 영적 삶을 돕는 방편으로 형성되고 인식되고 있다. 결론 및 제언 : 영적 지도의 발생과 변화가 의미하는 바는 영적 지도가 사회적 상호작용으로 인해 시대와 상황에 따라 다르게 이해되고 적용될 수 있다는 것이다. 또한, 영적 지도는 하나의 사회로써 한국 개신교의 통합 또는 분열의 원인으로 작용할 수 있다는 점을 간과해서는 안 된다.
