Objective: To evaluate the in vitro activities of ketoconazole, itraconazole and fluconazole against 7 standard strains and 42 clinical isolates of Malassezia species. Methods: The isolated colonies of Malassezia were identified according to their biochemical, physiological and morphological characteristics. In vitro activities of ketoconazole, itraconazole and fluconazole against 7 standard strains and 42 clinical isolates of Malassezia species were tested by M27-A microdilution method recom mended by National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS). Results: Five species,including M. sympodialis, M. fur fur, M. obtusa, M. globosa, and M. restricta, were identified out of 42 clinical isolates of Malassezia. It was found that the order of 3 azole antifungal agents from high to low susceptibility to Malassezia species was itraconazole〉 ketoconazole〉fluconazole. Conclusion: The susceptibilities of Malassezia species to ketoconazole, itraconazole , and fluconazole are different. Microdilution method from M27-A is suitable for testing the susceptibility of Malassezia in vitro.
