This study presents the influence of the landscape painting on the 18th century English Landscape Garden. Both of them have developed from the common aim of the realization of the ideal landscape. Especially, the 18th century English Landscape Garden, which is the object of this study was designed under the strong influence of the 17th century Italian ideal landscape paintings. This study presents the 18th century English Landscape Garden on three categories: the arcadian, the expressive, and the picturesque. The arcadian landscape shows strong influence of the ideal landscape painting of Italy, especially that of Claude Lorrain, Nicolas Poussin, and Salvator Rosa. Under the classical motto of "ut pictura poesis", they took serious consideration not only on the form of the landscape painting, but also on the theme and the meanings. Then in the period of expressive landscape, they sought to find the ideal forms in the natural elements as water, trees or earth while having considered the characters of the sites. "Capability" Brown imitated the method of landscape painting which assembles ideal elements in nature, so that he could make the ideal and beautiful scenery. Brownian landscape became the typical "English Landscape." After Brown"s death, theoretical conflicts on picturesque began. The picturesque theory was established by the Rev. Gilpin"s travel records and the heated controversy among Price, Knight, Repton and many more. This tendency towards wild nature such as the vogue of picturesque tour influenced the view of nature of the 18th century English. The English landscape garden, which is considered as the pioneer of the modern landscape architecture, exercises great influence on our view of nature and actual landscape. Therefore, this study will make a outstanding contribution in the study of landscape painting. What is more, it will help us have an open mind to the study on the mutual relation between the painting and the landscape.
