The study was to investigate psychological impacts of the Hebei Sprit oil spill event in 2007 on nearby residents. 464 adults of Taean residents were sampled based on Proportional Probability Sampling Method(Cho, 1990) and interviewed by telephone. Post traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, suicide, hostility, and paranoid thoughts were used as psychological health index. Stress coping, social trust, social support, optimism, meaning to life, and demographic variables were analyzed as moderating variables on stress effects. Results of the study showed very significant psychological impacts of the accident. 70.6% of residents were diagnosed as PTSD. Anxiety(27.1%), depression(36.6%), suicide idea(9.5%), hostility & aggression(16.8%), and paranoid thought(12.6%) were higher than normal(or norm) group(less than 2%). Exposure levels to the oil spill and subsequent events significantly predicted the psychological harms. These results imply causative effects of the accident. Ways of coping to stress, optimism, meaning to life, and social support were potential moderators for stress effects. Results of the study were discussed in terms of intervention strategies and future study.
