The purpose of this study was to explore the roles of sports for character development to suggest the useful guidelines for character education, investigating the relationship between sports and character development in fostering a whole person. Sage(1988) mentioned that the word of character has numerous meaning and is related to various values. The definition of character includes various meaning from personality to philosophical concept. Beller and Stoll(1995), Rudd(1998) has classified the concept of character into social character and moral character. Social character consists of teamwork, loyalty, self-sacrifice, and perseverance in a standpoint of social learning theory and sociology. On the other side, moral character influenced by an ancient Greek philosopher, Aristotle, consists of honesty, justice, compassion, respect, responsibility, and politeness. Sports emphasize such spirit as honor, honesty, fair play and courtesy in itself and do not permit an unjust act. The compliance of rules and sportsmanship throughout sporting activity lead participants to cultivate self-control and moral training, and contribute to character development as building up values and attitudes being able to care others. At this point, the article summarized useful guidelines that Shields and Bredmeier(1995) proposed for coaches, athletes, and parents. Finally, the roles of sport for character development were discussed from a view-point of the present day.
