This article aims to analyze the visualization of violence in film 〈Funny Games〉 (1997) by Michael Haneke. The code ‘Violence in film’ ist getting complex because of the raising of the problem of the invention of reality and the seeking virtual images through the various media. Haneke, as one of the well-known european film directors, will show us a personal solution for this problem. The visualization of violence by Haneke aims the genre film which produces the harmless - but spectacular - violence, and the audience who consumes it conventional. Thus, this study explores which arguments Haneke’s visualization of violence evokes in the relationship between the grammar of genre film and the reception of audience. Furthermore, this study examines how he destroys and changes the frames of genre films and which new environment for film understanding and participation of audience he proposes through this. The article analyzes this problems concretely in according to the space of violence, the personification of unmotivated violence, gazing the camera as ‘funny game’ toward the audience, plansequence for the creating of pain-image, non-narrative using of sound and noise, and rewind-sequence that points out the overturn of the genre thriller. As a result of analyzing such elements, we discovered that Haneke’s film 〈Funny Games〉 remains inside of the genre thriller but destroys the conventional frame of genre in the matter of the visualization of violence, and proved that his film experiments the ‘shock of cognition’ about the situation of the audience within the genre film.
