In a rapidly changing materialistic culture, elementary school students are becoming increasingly impatient, aggressive, and rebellious rather than being patient, calm, and mild. Small conflicts lead to fights on campus, bad language is used often, and the casual use of violence is no longer unusual. Moreover, elementary school students" stress levels are increasing due to the trends of higher average income, higher education levels, and higher levels of interest on the part of parents. In a talent-focused competitive society elementary school students are not only emotionally affected by the pressure from home, school, and society, but also receive a tremendous amount of stress. This paper examined how horticultural activities in the classroom using common plants could be used to mollify these students" emotions and to help stabilize their minds and bodies, in particular what effect such activities affected levels of aggression and stress. A post-study test revealed that the study participants, compared to control groups, showed stronger reductions in negativity (p<0.001), irritability(p<0.01), violence (p<.01), linguistic aggression(p<.05) and indirect aggression (p<0.05), all lower-level factors of aggression. This difference was statistically significant. A post-study test of stress levels revealed that the test group experienced reductions in stress from all sources, including teachers(p<0.001), classmates(p<0.001), schoolwork(p<.01), school(p<.001), parents(p<.05), siblings(p<.05), family environment(p<.01), economic factors(p<.01), personality(p<.01), and stress related to social life(p<.05). The differences were statistically significant. These results demonstrate that diverse horticultural activities using plants contribute to the stabilization of elementary school students" emotions as well as an increase in cooperation, socialization, and morality. Elementary school students were also able to find a temporary respite from psychological pressure by spending time with plants. Continued horticultural activities helped to change negative thoughts to positive ones, and the confidence gained from watching their plants grow contributed to a reduction in levels of stress and aggression that arose from many different sources. Therefore, the activation of sustained in-school horticultural activities programs were concluded to be necessary in order to reduce elementary school students" aggression and stress.
