This thesis is aimed at looking into Han Yong-un and Luxun"s outlook on "he world" so called Weltanschauung, as the pilot study preliminary to the one on the views of Han Yong-un and Luxun on their respective nations at early modern times. This study is significant in that it is a foundation of the more profound studies on their views on nations, the masses, lives, liberty, individuals, etc. The world named as "Tien Xia"(天下, the universe) had been recognized as the harmonious, united space revolving around the emperor and the king, and the people had lived self-sufficiently in their territories for ancient times of Korea and China. However, the feudal systems of the two closed societies were shattered as modern Western thought, civilization, science, and the theory of evolution penetrated in large into them in the 19th century. In other words, an unknown world outside "Tien Xia" was found. Besides, it was the competitive one in which the stronger preyed upon the weaker and in which there were hard struggles among states. And then, what was called, "Tien Xia", was recognized to be nothing but a peripheral state, no longer the widest epistemological unit; "this new viewpoint on the world" of the Korean and the Chinese intellectuals in the 19th and the early 20th century was promoted by the contact with the Western powers, i.e., Europe. The world views of Han Yong-un and Luxun were formed on the basis of materialism and the theory of evolution, and they began to recognize that international relations had been established under the rule of the survival of the fittest. Moreover, they considered that the real world was the one with no values, lacking in human rights, peace, hope, and freedom, which are essential in human society. In addition, Asia, where the two intellectuals had resided, was "the Asia backward in civilization" to them. In this respect, Asia signifies not the geographical and cultural area but the gathering of colonies. The national movement, the independence movement, the reformation movement, and the cultural movement of the two national leaders launched all based on the above -mentioned similar perceptions of the world.
