Objective : This study was designed to compare the clinical characteristics between adolescent-onset and adult-onset schizophrenia. Methods : Authors reviewed the hospital records of 103 inpatients, adolescent(early)-onset schizophrenia(EOS), 48 and adult(late)-onset schizophrenia(LOS), 54, respectively, who had been admitted in the psychiatric ward and diagnosed as schizophrenia according to DSM-Ⅲ-R at Kyunghee University Hospital during 1988-1999. All patients with neurologic diseases or substance abuse were excluded. Sociodemographic data, doctor"s description for the patients and the results of psychological tests were reviewed. Results : There was no difference in mode of onset between two groups. In EOS, the most common type of premorbid character was introverted type and in LOS, nervous one. Delusions, hallucinations and disorganized speeches did not reveal any differences between two groups. However, EOS showed negative symptoms more frequently and less tendency of aggressiveness and violence than LOS. In psychological tests, EOS showed significant difference in │VIQ-PIQ│ and significantly higher scores for Hs, D and Hy subscales of MMPI than LOS patients. In total subjects, patients with hallucination revealed significantly lower FlQ and VIQ than patients without hallucination. Conclusion : According to these results, age or onset can be a factor to be considered when classifying the subtypes of the disease. And based on intelligence test profile, it suggested that brain dysfunction is severer in EOS than LOS.
