The present Cheongpyeong-sa(淸平寺) is a temple originally constructed as Baekamseonwon in 973 during the rule of King Gwang-jong of Koryo and went through several renovations. As Lee ja-hyeon (1061-1125), one of the relatives of queen’s family, renounced the public office and renovated the temple to Munsuwon for his spiritual devotion, it became the center of Koryo Geosa buddhism. Jinrakgong Jungsu Cheongpyeongsan Munsuwongi, in short, Munsuwongi is an epitaph established in November, 1130 as Lee ja-hyeon received the title of Jinrakgong from King In-jong in August, 1130 after his death. The front was composed by Kim Bu-cheol and the back by Hye-so. The calligraphy for both sides was done by Tan-yeon, This epitaph is at present a significant piece of work for the study of buddhist art in mid Koryo. However, only the fragments of the epitaph remain. Since the fragments were discovered at the site of daewoongjeon, the main temple, of Cheongpyeong-sa in 1968, the study of epitaph was initiated by Prof. Hwang Su-young, As the interest in the history of Koryo buddhism grew, the study of epitaph received due attention. Yet, the research did not accompany much new discovery of original work by recovering the epitaph or examining takbon(拓本), the rubbed copy, but was a mere recitations from the already existing book, JosunGumseokChongram. Hence, making comparison between some documents, this study provides the groundwork for recovering the epitaph by distinguishing the wrong or missing letters. Several copies of takbon remains, yet most of them are in forms of bicheop, a collection of the epitaph with its parts randomly cut out and compiled. The arrangement of letters could have been changed and mixed up in the process of compiling into a bicheop and the spaces between each letter and line are uneven; thus, it is difficult to reconstruct the complete form of epitaph in its original arrangement. The lines, rows and spaces could be partly recovered by first making full sentences based on the study of documents and then verifying them in reference to takbon, This complicated process revealed that the number of letters on the front are altogether 1437, and that of the back 522. Twelve letters among the front and one among the back are still unconfirmed, In addition, the recent application of computer graphic to the recovery of Mireuksaji stone pagoda would also be critical to the recovery of Munsuwongi.
