This paper aims to analyze the development of visual culture, the socio-cultural causes of "lookism" and its social effect. The main socio-structural causes of the appearance of lookism are the technical innovation of mass media-especially in the visual media sector-, the expansion of capitalistic markets targeting to young generations and the rapid growth of beauty industry and beauty technique in consumer society as well as the advance of visual culture. It is possible that the proliferation of lookism as well as highly developed visual culture would further promoth the dissolution and conflict of our society. Especlally, in the future multi-cultural society, it is likely that the job seekers of immigration would experience more serious inequallity and discrimination related tof their physical attractiveness at the labor markets. Therefore, the cultural institutions such as family, peer group, school, other supplementary educational boodies and the mass media have to correct the dysfunctions of lookism and create new concept of visual culture teaching what we have to see indeed, how we interpret and perceive it. Especiaily, the mass media have to set the pace of creating new culture which can make our spirit free from the obsession of the outer beauty. Moreover, the press, broadcast and legal system also have to take more attention to the accuracy of report, objectivity and fairness to disciose the suspicions hidden in the outer appearance of social phenomena.
