After the human society has turned into a consumer society, people purchase products to pursue fantasies, not to meet the requirements of daily life. The medium which aggravates indiscreet consumption is surely advertising, especially, Point-of-Purchase. It seduces consumers to spend money, use materials and waste energy. The purpose of the POP accelerating more waste goes against the goal of sustainable development which pursues less waste through less purchasing. To solve this inconsistency, a new point of view for sustainability of POP is necessary beyond recycling. This study focused on the circumstances in discount mass merchandising stores which are a larger percentage of the overall channels for spending of current household economy. It is necessary to establish guidelines to design sustainable POP that frequently get changed. For guidelines through case studies, four major functions of POP were clarified. A survey was conducted with customers to assess degree of functional fulfillment of the every collected case. Then fifteen POP design methods to reduce environmental impacts were derived and modified to settle problems in current POP usage in discount mass merchandising stores and to optimize circumstantial features. Revised design methods were organized on a table of sixteen eels with two axes. Every cell in the table has two aspects; a functional objective of design to perform as POP and an applicable means to ensure sustainability. As a consequence, designers would be able to use the table as guidelines for designing sustainable POP. This research and the guidelines can be summarized as a strategy to promote less waste through less production. It would be able to reduce repetitive waste by discouraging additional POP installations which frequently replaced by another. Furthermore, the guidelines of this strategy can be more useful and practical by increasing oases.
