This study is to analyze the movie text(Pirates of the Caribbean: The Cruse of the Black Peal, The Day a Pig Fell into the Well, Identity, and The Life of David Gale) centered on the theory of Jacques Lacan, French psychoanalyst, about desire. Some consider that Lacan"s work has come to dominate a film theory, which has a central focus on the feminist theory, and has apparently a major and permanent influence on the literary criticism.
Lacan reinterprets the enigma of the Unconscious from the perspective of the structuralist view of the language. According to Lacan, Symbol has two incompatible aspects. Symbol puts other all the signifier in their own places. Subject should identify Other to ensure his own identity and to fulfill his lack caused by castration. However this symbolic order cannot constitute Whole, because it is constructed around the Lack. Fantasy and the conscious of the others can make people realize one’s ideal.
Movie text Pirates of the Caribbean shows a dilemma of desire. Movie text The Day a Pig Fell into the Well shows danger of a meaningless daily life. Movie text Identity shows madness from misconception. Movie text The Life of David Gale shows the attainment of desire centered upon Other-consciousness.
