본 연구는 “장애인 독서 환경 개선 방안” 연구의 기초 연구로써 (독서)장애인의 독서 및 도서관 이용 실태를 분석하였다. 고령자 179명과 (시각)장애인 126명을 대상으로 하여 설문을 실시하였는데, 결과는 첫째, 고령자 독서 실태에서 고령자들은 독서에 대한 관심이 높지 않았으며, 주당 평균 4편, 4시간 정도 읽는 것으로 나타났고, 독서를 하는데 큰 불편이 없는 것으로 조사되었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 고령자들은 확대경과 시설 이용 등에 많은 불편함을 느끼고 있었다. 시각장애인의 독서 실태에서 시각장애인들은 주당 3회에 5시간 정도 독서를 하며, 주로 소설이나 시 등과 같은 문학작품을 읽고 있다. 독서를 하는데 있어 점자책의 종류가 한정돼 있는 이유로 불편함을 경험하고 있으며 이와 같은 문제 해결을 위해 녹음도서 및 점자도서의 보급ㆍ확대를 희망하고 있다. 둘째, (시각)장애인의 도서관 서비스 이용실태에서 시각장애인은 새로운 지식과 정보를 습득하기 위해 도서관을 이용하며, 도서관의 자료 비치정도에 대해 만족스럽지 못하며, 전자도서의 대출 정도가 높게 나타났다. 전체적으로 도서관에 대한 만족도는 높음에도 불구하고 자료의 부족, 다양한 형식의 도서가 없다는 점에 대해서는 여전히 불만족하고 있는 것으로 나타났다.
