The purpose of this study is to analyze the image changes in gender roles featured in TV ads. Major findings show that the stereotypical portrayals of gender roles in TV ads still remain dominant and persistent. However, in recent years, particularly since 2000, the traditional gender stereotypes have changed and instead new gender roles have emerged in recent TV ads. Overall, the findings indicate that stereotypical representation of gender roles perpetuates TV ads while new gender role norms are being shaped and created in ads, reflecting a shift in the sociocultural attitude toward gender role. Notwithstanding the constantly changing gender roles, the typical stereotypes for women, particularly idealizations for women as a wise mother, a submissive wife, a beautiful and young woman still permeate TV ads, However, such stereotypical representation of gender role has significantly decreased since 2000 and in the most recent years, the tendency of portraying women in the stereotypical way exhibits sharper decrease. Most noticeable changes in gender stereotypes for women include the increase in the number of professional women pursuing careers and more frequent appearance of women replacing many of the previously supported roles for only men. In particular, the fact that such trend also takes place among those in aged 30-40 years is a significant change in the portrayals of women in ads. Moreover, more TV ads portray diverse age groups of women ranging from 50 to 60 even 70 years. With regard to men in TV ads, the stereotypical depiction of ideal images for men as being physically strong, adventurous, capable and successful still remain. Yet, there have been significant changes in portraying men in TV ads as being tender-hearted, attentive, and caring, which reflects a shift in stereotypes for men. However, the preference for young men models in TV ads, especially those in their 20"s still remains stereotypical.
