A Study on the Emotional Identification in TV Drama Viewing - Relationships among Homophily, Viewing Motives, and Viewing Satisfaction

This study examined the effect of emotional identification on the following variables: homophily, viewing motives, and viewing satisfaction. The study results are: First, the emotional identification was influenced by internal homophily like attitude or values, but external homophily like appearance or background had no influence on the emotional identification. Second, the results of the factor analysis showed that viewing motives of TV drama were composed of eight factors, such as "information/culture," "homophily," "escape," "habit," "companionship/conversation," "family relations," "loneliness," and "amusement." Using regression analysis, the study found that escape and homophily were the strongest predictors of emotional identification and habit, information/culture, amusement motives were also positively related to emotional identification. This result suggested that various viewing motives had different power of influence on emotional identification. Third, using path analysis, the study found that homophily and viewing motives were positive predictors of emotional identification, and emotional identification had an affirmative effect on viewing satisfaction. In addition, homophily and viewing motives had both direct and indirect effect on viewing satisfaction. Consequently, emotional identification was an important predictor of viewing satisfaction.
