This paper explores various types of change happening in the beat, measure, and rhythmic pattern (jangdan) of Korean traditional music. Especially, the study focuses on elongation and shortening of time value that causes changes in the levels of beat, rhythm, and jangdan. Also, the study includes tempo change that brings out variations in the beat, measure, and jangdan. Classical theory in the past has discussed only one level of beat, rhythm, and jangdan. However, modern music theory proved that Korean traditional music as well as western music has various levels of beat, rhythm, and jangdan, constructing structures. There are many kinds of beats in Korean traditional music theory, such as small small beat, small beat, normal beat [yeoneu beat], big beat, big big beat, and big big big beat. The relationships among these beats and their levels are assembly of combined structures of one to two, and one to three. The units of rhythms are based on the beats constructing rhythmical structures as well. Small small beat is the unit of small small rhythm; small beat is the unit of small rhythm; normal beat is the unit of normal rhythm; big beat is the unit of big rhythm; big big beat is the unit of big big rhythm, and big big big beat is the unit of big big big rhythm. Jangdan, the rhythmic pattern, also has structures divided into two types. The first type includes normal jangdan, small jangdan, and big jangdan. The first example is jungjungmori jangdan which is normal jangdan composed of three levels of rhythms. Semedi, used in Gyeonggi folk song, is an example of small jangdan which is incomplete normal jangdan. Big jangdan, so called double jangdan, consists of several normal jangdan, such as rhythmic patterns used in classical lyric song [sijo]. In the other type, jangdan depends on the smallest unit of the beat. Normal beat forms normal beat jangdan, big beat forms big beat jangdan, and big big beat forms big big beat jangdan. The exampleof elongation and shortening of time value causing changes in the levels of beat, rhythm, and jangdan is jungjungmori and ginmanse jangdan. Jungjungmori"s 4 normal beats extended into 8 beats. This type is called "The level changes by extension and contraction of time value." The relationship of jungjungmori and jungmori shows the other type of level changes in jangdan. When the jungjungmori tempo slows down, its 4 normal beats expand, and they become jungmori in 12 beats. This type should be called "the level variation caused by tempo changes with expansion and contraction of all components.
